“Der letzte Jahrgang, der den Namenszusatz «Hermitage» trägt. Duftet nach Waldboden, schwarzem Pfeffer, Zimt, Vadouvan und gelbem Currypulver. Im Mund zeigen sich Lakritz und Süssholz, auch Anklänge von dunkler Frucht finden sich, dann kommt wieder diese faszinierende Würze und filigrane Leichtigkeit. Ein Wein voller Frische und Transparenz.”
96/100 — The Wine Independent · 1989 Vintage (Tasted Aug 2023)

93/100 — Falstaff · 1989 Vintage (Tasted Feb 2018)
“Kräftiges Rubingranat, gesunde Farbe, floral, Veilchen und schwarze Oliven, gegen alle Erwartungen eine ganz junge Nase. Saftig, süß und sehr ausgewogen, frische Brombeeren und Kirschen, schokoladig und anhaltend, eine große, positive Überraschung, hat Länge und Kraft. Hat in dieser Verfassung große Zukunft.”
93/100 — Tom Cannavan · 1989 Vintage (Tasted Jan 1999)
“(1999) Dense purple. Ah! what a nose: ultra-rich New World shiraz. Port-like, massive, unctuous sweet fruit, dense with a velvety black chocolate richness. Stunning nose. Palate carries this through in a really silky, vanilla-infused power of opulent black fruit and spice. Incredibly long, the tannins are supportive but soft, and the acidity beautifully integrated. Very, very fine.”
“A warm year has resulted in a typically full-weighted wine, albeit, one that is now at, or even past its apex of maturity. Avuncular aromas of cinder-box, tamarind, clove and varnished leather, with a wisp of menthol and muscle rub. A core of sweet curranty fruit lingers. There is plenty of charm here and with that, imminent appeal for those picking up a bottle in the secondary market. Drink now.”

About This Wine
Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is Australia's most famous wine with a reputation for superb fruit complexity and flavour richness. An exquisitely perfumed and concentrated wine, it combines the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. A portion of Cabernet Sauvignon is used in some years to enhance aromatics and palate structure.
Grange is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted from fully ripe, intensely flavoured and structured Shiraz grapes, it represents a distinctive Australian style recognised among the world’s great wines.
With an unbroken lineage of vintages dating back to the experimental 1951 release, Grange demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.
The 1989 growing season saw below-average rainfall and a hot February, followed by heavy rains in March. Older Grange vineyards were better able to withstand these conditions.
