An exquisitely perfumed and concentrated wine, it combines the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. A portion of Cabernet Sauvignon is used in some years to enhance aromatics and palate structure. Grange is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted from fully ripe, intensely flavoured and structured Shiraz grapes, it represents a distinctive Australian style recognised among the world’s great wines. With an unbroken lineage of vintages dating back to the experimental 1951 release, Grange demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. The 1989 growing season saw below-average rainfall and a hot February, followed by heavy rains in March. Older Grange vineyards were better able to withstand these conditions.
