Awards, Ratings & Reviews Wine Spectator Top 100 #2 — Wine Spectator Top 100 · 1995 Vintage · Awarded: 1998 97/100 — Jean-Marc Quarin · 1995 Vintage · Tasted: Jun 2017 When to drink: 2007 to 2045 95/100 — Falstaff · 1995 Vintage · Tasted: Jan 2004 “Deep ruby garnet, violet rim, animal notes on the nose, leather, roasted nuts, vanilla, multi-layered and attractive, powerful on the palate, good extract sweetness, tannins still require some time, a little too hard at the moment, mineral, very tasty.” 95/100 — Robert Parker The Wine Advocate · 1995 Vintage · Tasted: May 2009 When to drink: 2009 to 2030 94/100 — Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider · 1995 Vintage · Tasted: Apr 2022 “Firm, masculine, hard style of Margaux with ample, ripe, fruits, great aromatics, but the tannic spine will take at least another decade to soften, that is if it does. The finish has a touch of greeness in the endnote. I own some, but I am not sure this is going to change much, we will have to wait and see, which is a lot to ask, considering it is already 27 years old! 94 Points” 90/100 — La Revue du Vin de France · 1995 Vintage · Tasted: Jan 2006 About This Wine Classification: 1er Grand Cru Classé. Château Margaux is located just east of Margaux itself in the Médoc. Along with Lafite, Latour and Haut-Brion, it was rated as a first growth in the original 1855 Bordeaux Classification of the Médoc. After a very mild winter, the bud-break and flowering were early and even. The whole summer was one of a great vintage: hot and very dry. The quite heavy rain that arrived in the middle of September was without doubt of benefit to the ripening of the grapes. The weather was then superb throughout the harvest. Picking began 15th September. The vineyards consist of chalky clay under a top layer of coarse and fine gravels. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for around 75 percent of plantings, with Merlot around 20 percent, and the remainder Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard is densely planted at 10,000 vines per hectare. Tasting Notes 1995 is a truly great vintage with all the hallmark characteristics: power, depth, richness, complexity, but also delicacy, subtlety and harmony. Today the nose is not really closed, but still rather restrained. All the aromas are there, but a bit masked. On the palate, it is obviously the power that dominates; the tannic structure is dense, tight and firm without being hard.Ideally, you should wait a few more years before starting to drink this superb wine whose balance will assure a very harmonious evolution.
