About This Wine
This wine is named in tribute to Cyril Henschke (1924–1979), one of Australia’s outstanding winemaking pioneers, known for old-vine single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cabernet Sauvignon was planted at the Henschke Eden Valley vineyard in the 1960s.
The vineyard is situated on a north-facing slope in Eden Valley, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown under organic and biodynamic practices.
The 1996 vintage followed average winter rainfall after two drought years. A mild spring with excellent flowering conditions and a mild, cool but windy summer resulted in above-average yields. A cool, dry autumn enabled a long, slow ripening period with very good flavour development and quality.
Producer Notes
Deep crimson with brick red hues. Complex, savoury aromas of tar, cedar and leather are supported by sweet cassis, chocolate and scented violet nuances. Beautiful layers of ripe dark fruits and dried spices are complimented by a creamy texture and elegant fine-grained tannins for a lingering finish.
