James Suckling
(2014 Vintage, Tasted: Oct 2022)
“With its deep well of black-fruit, smoked-bacon and dry-earth aromas, this is an imposing and rich shiraz, but it has a stunning harmony of ripeness and fine tannins, the very long, plush finish wonderfully balanced and very complex. Drink or hold.”
About This Wine
Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz, from the Clare Valley, is one of Australia’s most important and historically significant red wines. Its reputation is closely tied to the postwar development of South Australia’s modern wine industry and its long-standing recognition in Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine.
Produced from a single vineyard located two kilometres northwest of Clare township, The Armagh vineyard was established in 1968 and derives its name from a nearby hamlet founded by Irish settlers in 1849. The site’s elevated position and Clare Valley climate contribute to the wine’s distinctive power, structure and longevity.
Renowned for its intensely expressive aromas, chocolatey richness and sinuous structure, The Armagh develops remarkable density and vigour with extended bottle age, underpinned by provenance, family stewardship and a long-standing commitment to excellence.
