97/100 — James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion · 2014 Vintage
“From the estate vineyard planted in 1899 at Marananga, matured in French oak (30% new for 18 months, not fined or filtered). Full-bodied, but very well balanced, and has a purity, a strong sense of place to its black/forest berry fruit; the French oak, too, plays a positive role. A great example of the genre.”

— James Suckling · 2014 Vintage (Tasted: Jun 2017)
“Complex nose with gentle fresh leathery notes. Blackberries, brambly elements and baking spices. The palate is thick, lush and assertive. The line weight of tannin here is impressive. Best from 2020.”
About This Wine
Alte Reben, meaning “Old Vines” in German, is produced entirely from grapes grown in Kaesler’s Marananga vineyard planted in 1899. The wine showcases the power and flavour of these old vines from a single nine-acre vineyard planted in the nineteenth century.
The fruit was handpicked and left on skins for seven days, with gentle pump-overs twice daily. The wine was matured in French oak puncheons, including new and seasoned barrels, for extended ageing.
About the Winery
Kaesler Wines is an Australian wine producer based in the Barossa Valley. The estate is known for producing wines from old vine vineyards, with a focus on site expression and traditional winemaking.
