Overview
The 2015 Craggy Range Sophia is a flagship Merlot-led blend from Hawke’s Bay, inspired by the great wines of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. Sourced from the famed Gimblett Gravels, this vintage combines power, refinement, and precision, reflecting an outstanding growing season and Craggy Range’s mastery of Bordeaux varieties.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Fruit is drawn from low-yielding vines rooted in the free-draining gravel soils of the Gimblett Gravels, a site celebrated for producing structured yet elegant reds. Merlot forms the heart of the blend, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Each parcel was fermented separately before extended maturation in high-quality French oak barriques, building depth, aromatic complexity, and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson in colour, with aromas of black cherry, plum, and cassis layered with cedar, graphite, and subtle floral notes. The palate is rich and finely sculpted, delivering concentrated dark fruit, savoury nuance, and polished tannins. Bright acidity provides lift and balance, leading to a long, composed finish of clarity and persistence.
Style and Character
The 2015 vintage showcases Sophia at its most confident and complete — generous yet controlled, structured yet refined. It is a wine of pedigree and balance, offering both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential.
Cellaring and Pairing
Drinking well now with decanting, yet capable of evolving gracefully for 15–20 years. Ideal with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, or mushroom-based dishes that complement its depth and structure.
