95/100 — James Suckling · 2016 Vintage
“A very elegant and silky vintage Champagne with a seamless harmony of candied citrus fruit, sushi ginger and dried cherry character with racy acidity and delicate minerality at the long, straight and refined finish. You don’t even think about how much or little dosage this has. Drink or hold.”
About This Wine
The 2016 Brut Vintage from Pol Roger is made from the traditional house blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 20 Grands and Premiers Crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.
Produced only in limited quantities, the wine has been aged in deep cellars before disgorging and release.
Winemaking
The must undergoes two débourbages, with pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24-hour period. A slow cool fermentation with temperature maintained at 18°C occurs in stainless steel with each variety and vineyard kept separate.
The wine undergoes a full malolactic fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in deep Pol Roger cellars, followed by hand riddling.
Producer Notes
Pale yellow with silver highlights, the wine produces an alluring effervescence from a cord of fine persistent bubbles.
An especially open and expressive nose begins with notes of dried fruit, cocoa, almond and coconut, followed by fresh fruit such as Mirabelle plum and apple.
The palate is precise and fresh with citrus, lemon and bitter orange, complemented by subtle notes of candied orange peel on a long, refined finish.
