93/100 — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion · 2018 Vintage · Published: 26 August 2024
“The ‘second wine’ of iconic Tasmanian producer, Domaine A. It’s a Bordeaux-esque blend, cabernet at its base, that presents in a classic and distinctly comforting and familiar style. Leather-sheathed blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of baking spices, tobacco, cedar, briar, bay leaf, licorice and earth. Compact fine tannins and G&T-like acidity provide frame and propulsion, finishing with gentle cassis, sous bois, spice and tobacco pouch tones.”
About This Wine
This special pre-release Petit A is drawn from the 2018 vintage, a year noted for excellent fruit quality and well suited to expressing the character of Stoney Vineyard.
Built around a firm Cabernet Sauvignon core, the wine has already spent three years in oak and bottle, giving early structure and depth while retaining the capacity for long-term cellaring.
About the Winery
Domaine A is one of Tasmania’s most respected wine estates, founded with the ambition to produce age-worthy, Old World–inspired wines in the cool climate of southern Tasmania. Its eleven-hectare Stoney Vineyard, first planted in 1973 in the Coal River Valley, is defined by ancient Jurassic dolerite soils, a temperate maritime climate and a long growing season.
The estate’s philosophy is uncompromising: fruit is never rushed, yields are tightly controlled and wines are released only when they are ready. Alongside its flagship Domaine A wines, the Stoney Vineyard and Petit A bottlings offer different expressions of the same vineyard and philosophy.
