96/100 — Huon Hooke · 2018 Vintage (17 Dec 2025, When to drink: 2026–2042)
“(a 50/50 blend) Very deep, dark red with a good rim of purple; there are very complex and charming aromas of blackberry, violet, earthy/terracotta notes and subtle spices. Liquorice and charmin mint tar. A touch of preserved plum. The wine is full bodied and deep but also preserves a modicum of elegance, of balance, and will age long term but also be approachable fairly early. A ripping red blend.”
James Suckling · 2018 Vintage (Tasted: Sep 2020, When to drink: 2022 to 2048)
“A 50/50 blend of the best barrel of Old Garden 1853 mourvedre and the best barrel of Monopole Mother Vine shiraz, which is grown from the cuttings of a lone shiraz vine found in among the 1853 mourvedre. This has striking violet florals and very intense blueberries, blackberries and licorice with tarry accents, forest wood, herbs, camphor, pepper and chocolate. The palate is bathed in rich dark-berry flavors. Dark chocolate pervades the layers of smooth, intense and super long tannins. Essence-like finish. Drink over the next 20 years.”
