The 2018 Yalumba FDR1A Cabernet Shiraz is a classic South Australian red that reflects the estate’s deep heritage in blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. This Fine Dry Red (FDR) release captures the hallmark Yalumba balance of structure, richness, and regional identity, showcasing fruit sourced from premium vineyards across Eden Valley and Barossa Valley.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Each parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz was vinified separately before blending to achieve balance and complexity. Fermentation took place in open-top fermenters with hand plunging to gently extract tannins and colour. The wine was matured for 15 months in French oak barriques and hogsheads, 25 percent new, enhancing texture while preserving fruit purity.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry are layered with subtle notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied yet refined, with rich dark fruit supported by silky tannins and savoury spice. A fine line of acidity adds freshness, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Style and Character
The 2018 vintage is celebrated for its balance of power and finesse, with the Cabernet providing structure and length while the Shiraz adds plush fruit and warmth. Together, they create a harmonious wine that captures the essence of Yalumba’s house style.
Cellaring and Pairing
Beautifully balanced for enjoyment now yet capable of ageing gracefully for 10 to 12 years. Pairs superbly with roast lamb, beef short ribs, or mushroom and herb-infused dishes that highlight its savoury complexity.
