Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion
93/100
2019 Vintage · Tasted: 19 Mar 2025 · Drink: 2025–2038
“She’s a famous old wine, this one. A wine with quite a pedigree in the annals of Australian fine wine. That familiar, fleshy, high-toned fruit is still there for sure, with rich aromas showing layers of brown spice, black cherry, some red plum top notes and forest fruits along with tobacco leaf and mocha oak. There’s a light musky edge to the plush, plummy fruit on the palate; a raft of fine tannins and a distinct old-school leather, oak wood spice and pipe tobacco edge as the wine trails off.”
About This Wine
The Grand Merlot is the flagship wine of Irvine Wines, produced from Eden Valley vineyards. The 2019 vintage continues the producer’s long-standing focus on Merlot as a benchmark expression of the variety in Australia.
Producer Tasting Notes
Deep crimson red with a ruby hue. Aromas of plum and black cherry are layered with cedar, coffee and earthy notes. The palate is full-bodied, with juicy blackberry fruit, accents of anise, green plum and menthol, and supporting mocha and dark chocolate characters. Fine, supple tannins provide structure and persistence.
