94/100 — Gary Walsh, The Wine Front · 2019 Vintage · Published: Aug 2021
“Liquorice and spice, blackberry and plum, a slightly woody top note, but mint and dried rose perfume too. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and dark in flavour profile, layered with exotic spice, some black olive salinity, a bouncy chew to grainy tannin, and a slightly splintery finish of excellent length. Forceful, and kind of overt, but I like it a lot.”
About This Wine
Shiraz Malbec 13.5% alc; 50/50 shiraz and malbec from 1998 Eastern and 1898 Central plantings.
About the Producer
The Clare Valley’s Wendouree was established in 1895 by the Birks family. “A.P. Birks Wendouree” refers to Alfred Percy Birks, who established the first vines in 1892 on a property then known as Spring Farm. The first vintage was 1895.
The estate includes old, dry-grown vineyards on poor, shallow red loam over limestone soils, producing modest crops of small berries with high skin and seed to juice ratio.
The wines are open fermented and matured in a combination of large vats and small oak, with only about 20% new oak.
