The 2021 Grains of Paradise Shiraz represents the pinnacle of Barossa Valley craftsmanship from Charles Melton, one of South Australia’s most respected winemakers. A refined and structured expression, this wine captures the essence of Barossa’s old-vine Shiraz with poise, richness, and regional character.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Sourced from low-yielding, dry-grown vines in the central and northern Barossa Valley, the fruit was hand-picked and fermented in open-top fermenters with regular hand plunging to build structure and depth. The wine then matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak for approximately 18 months, achieving perfect harmony between power and finesse.
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson in colour, the nose opens with layers of blackberry, plum, dark cherry, and mulberry, interwoven with notes of black pepper, clove, cocoa, and savoury spice. The palate is full and richly textured, offering concentrated black fruit wrapped in fine-grained tannins. Subtle oak integration brings balance and length, finishing with elegance and persistence.
Style and Character
Grains of Paradise has long been known for its refined Barossa style—complex yet restrained, showcasing purity of fruit and exceptional balance. The 2021 vintage highlights both concentration and freshness, a hallmark of the cool, even growing season.
Cellaring and Pairing
Superb drinking now but will evolve beautifully over 10–15 years. Ideal with roasted lamb, grilled steak, venison, or aged cheddar, where the wine’s spice and texture shine through.
