2021 Domaine Gavoty ‘Storia’, Côtes de Provence, Provence, France

Domaine Gavoty is located in Cabasse, in the heart of the Côtes de Provence. The vineyards have been in the Gavoty family for more than 200 years and the estate is currently run by the eighth generation, Roselyne, who took charge of winemaking in 1985 and farms the 43 hectares of vineyards organically. 150 hectares of the property is left fallow, mostly as woodland, to encourage biodiversity. Surrounded by oak and pine forests and bordered by the Issole, it is a polycultural farm encompassing 110 hectares in total, and the family has worked the land without synthetic chemicals for decades, obtaining organic certification in recent years. The Storia is a wine made from old vines of 100% Carignan. If you like Zinfandel, Merlot or perhaps a Côtes du Rhône blend, then you will love Carignan. Since Carignan vines are naturally so productive, the best Carignan wines tends to come from old vines where the productivity of this grape is low. The Storia is a great example of it, it is bursting with black fruits and spices with a touch of liquorice and pepper, it is also quite pretty with fine and supple tannins.
