2021 Niepoort ‘Redoma’, Douro, Portugal

Niepoort, established in 1842 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, is a renowned winery under fifth-generation Dirk Niepoort. Originally a Port house, it ventured into Douro still wines in 1991, acquiring Quinta de Nápoles. Dirk’s innovative, terroir-focused approach crafts expressive wines from 25 hectares of old vines, earning Niepoort worldwide recognition for blending tradition with modern winemaking. Redoma Tinto pairs beautifully with Douro’s cuisine. Grilled lamb with rosemary complements its spicy depth, while bacalhau à bras enhances its mineral notes. A vegetarian chestnut and mushroom stew with local herbs echoes its earthy, graphite character, anchoring it to the Douro Valley’s robust culinary heritage. The 2021 Niepoort Redoma Tinto, a blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, and others, is fermented in lagares and aged 20 months in French oak. It offers vibrant blackberry, violet, and graphite notes with spicy, mineral undertones.
