2021 Pittnauer Blaufränkisch ‘Heideboden’, Burgenland, Austria

For over 20 years, Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer have been at the helm of their winery in Gols, near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, on Austria's eastern border with Hungary, a beautiful part of the world. During this time, they have pushed the limits of Austrian red winemaking, especially with Blaufränkisch. In 2001, the construction of a striking production hall in the heart of the vineyards marked a significant upgrade in both quality and production. Their wines are elegant, well-structured, complex, and incredibly drinkable. From the Pitti blend to their vibrant, additive-free wines, and all the way to the outstanding single-vineyard selections, one thing is clear: Pittnauer is among the most forward-thinking, creative, and talented winemakers in Europe. Why do we like it? The Blaufränkisch Heideboden  is made from grapes for that are hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged on the lees in large, seasoned wooden barrels for about six months. That grape can be compare to Syrah to some extent, expect aromas of herbs and black berries notes, accented by notes of pepper and earthy undergrowth.
