Istvan Szepsy is one of the legends of the Tokaji region. His family have been producing wines in the region since 1500s. Szepsy is a leading producer of Tokaji wine, based in the village of Mád, just northwest of Tokaj town in northeast Hungary. The soils are mainly volcanic and rich in zeolite, quartz and clay. The average age of the vines exceeds 40 years. In the cellar native yeasts are used, enzyme additions are avoided, and sulphur additions kept to a minimum. So expect a delight, a wine that is fresh and dry but also very complex.
Why do we like it?
With a pale gold colour in the glass, showcasing its freshness and vibrancy. On the nose it offers a harmonious blend of flowers, baked apples, and pears, complemented with hints of citrus. The palate is clean, mineral and it’s revealing a long smoky finish. This wine can certainly age, 5 or 6 years will be interesting on the bottle.
