2021 Vitícola Mentridana ‘El Mentridano’ Garnacha, Méntrida, Spain

$48.00
The Sierra de Gredos, located southwest of Madrid, is a region characterized by its rugged granite peaks, forests, and hilltop towns. This area possesses a unique micro-climate, thanks to its high altitude, well-draining granitic soils, and an extended growing season. Vines thrive on scree-slopes, many of which were long-abandoned but are now being rediscovered by a new generation of growers. Pioneers like Dani Landi have been instrumental in working with old vines to craft elegant, mineral-driven wines. These wines are redefining the perception of Garnacha, elevating it to a level of elegance and finesse that can rival some of the world's most sought-after reds. Why do we like it? Curro Barreño, a friend of Dani and one half of the brilliant Ribeira Sacra project Fedellos, has returned to this area where he grew up. Since 2021, he has taken over Dani's vineyards in Méntrida and produces wines under the Vitícola Mentridana label. Curro continues Dani's meticulous work, interpreting the vineyards, and employing a gentle approach in the winemaking process. He's delighted to have returned to his roots, contributing to the evolution of wines in the area, which are now considered modern classics, graceful and highly enjoyable. Curro Barreño's Garnacha, cultivated at high altitudes and grown in granite soils, marries delicate strawberries, plum, sweet spices and floral aromas with a robust structure, a true testament to the region's potential.
