— Mike Bennie, Wine Front
“Good stuff here. Has a juiciness but also swish of firming, sooty tannins, good clove spice elements.”
— Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
“Made mostly with syrah and nebbiolo with a minor portion of sangiovese. All estate-grown. It works for both its savouriness and for its fruitiness. It’s all woodsy spice and blue-black berries and while there isn’t a great deal of tannin it feels well framed and sustained.”
About This Wine
The Castagna vineyard was planted in 1997 on former grazing land and is situated at an altitude of 500 metres, five-and-a-half kilometres outside the town of Beechworth in north-east Victoria. The vineyard has been farmed biodynamically from the beginning and is fully certified organic and biodynamic.
The soils are primarily decomposed granitic-loam with quartz particles over a clay base, and the climate is continental, with hot days and cool nights during the growing season. The vineyard is hand-pruned and the fruit is hand-picked, cropped at a little under two tons per acre.
Winemaking is traditional, using only indigenous vineyard yeasts with minimal intervention. Élevage varies between 18 and 20 months in tight-grain French oak, with approximately half new oak each year. Adam’s Rib The Red is a Nebbiolo and Syrah blend made from younger vines, crafted to be flavoursome, textural and approachable.
