94/100 — Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion · 2022 Vintage · Published: 07 August 2024
“This is a pan-regional blend, knitting together the characteristics of varying geologies and macroclimates. There’s violet and lilac, ground coffee and tar, boysenberry, blueberry and plum, dried seaweed, iodine, soft licorice and morcilla. The cool year has put a cap on sweetness of fruit, which is no bad thing, though it is still mouth-filling and intense, tannins chewy and layered, calling for food.”
About This Wine
Lily’s Garden is a Shiraz sourced from McLaren Vale vineyards, described as the pick of the bunch. It is characterised by a generous profile with cascading blue fruits and a rich, long palate.
General sand based soils contribute lifted aromatics, softness and roundness. The label’s blue colour takes inspiration from McLaren Vale’s close proximity to the sea.
After a second La Niña year in a row, the vineyards received above average winter rainfall, followed by a very mild spring and summer with only one day recorded over 40°C. Slightly later flowering led to a slower maturation pace, with the start of vintage delayed by around three weeks. These mild ripening conditions, combined with lower yields, resulted in another quality harvest.
Producer Notes
COLOUR | Impenetrable inky red, with crimson hue.
AROMA | A wave of enticing aromas rises from the glass, black and blue fruits, mocha, cardamom, expresso, dried fig, fresh plum, smoke, liquorice and cola.
PALATE | This wine boasts a rich, concentrated fruit character that envelops the palate with deep, dark fruits. Gradually, the acidity reveals itself, highlighting the round, supportive tannins. The mid-palate transition from a luscious coating to a drier sensation, where a firm, mineral backbone allows the tannins to unfold beautifully on the finish. This wine captures the essence of McLaren Vale, showcasing ripe, full-bodied flavours that evolve into a captivating late palate marked by a harmonious blend of power, structure, and sweet fruit. Many will be drawn to the cascading layers of sweet, rolling fruit, which gracefully transition as the tannins gently reveal themselves. Like much of our 2022 Garden Series, this wine has all the right components for rewarding extended cellaring, ensuring a balanced and promising future.
