Astobiza was established by Xabier Abando in 1996, fueled by childhood memories of working in the vineyards. After his father's death, he realized his dream near Okondo, launching his first vintage in 2008 at age 68. His legacy continues with his son-in-law Jon and enologist Ana, combining tradition and innovation.
Why do we like it?
Astobiza's Txakoli originates from the Hondarrabi Zuri grape, grown at high altitudes in Álava. The wine's production involves cold fermentation in stainless steel, enhancing its fresh, fruity profile with notes of pear, apple, and citrus. It's a vivid expression of Basque terroir, balancing acidity with minerality. First time I tried this wines was while working at Celler de Can Rocca in Girona and immediately found myself in love with them, as they reminded me of Vinho Verde, so close to the heart.
