2023 Standish 'The Standish' Shiraz 750ml

$157.40
The organically cultivated, dry-grown The Standish Single Vineyard Shiraz originates from the western outskirts of the Barossa Valley. Meticulous manual fruit selection and traditional winemaking practices, such as foot stomping, are complemented by aging in new (20%) and seasoned French oak. This contemporary and expressive full-bodied style is characterized by profoundly concentrated dark fruit notes, finely textured chocolate undertones, and harmoniously integrated oak elements. Drinking Window: 2023-2043 Dan Standish is an extremely experienced winemaker, adding work in the Napa and Sonoma valleys in California, La Rioja in Spain and the Rhone Valley in France to his domestic winemaking. A 6th generation Barossan, Dan His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father... All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk. As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension.   96 Points James Halliday Companion "Made with 100% shiraz sourced from the Laycock vineyard in the western parish of Greenock. Deeply coloured with heady, pure fruit of substantial weight and density. Dark plum compote and black berry fruits studded with dark spice, licorice, cassis, earth, dark chocolate, cold tea and wood spice. It's like a piston on the palate, all compression and release, the core of fruit and spice propelled across the palate with impressive cadence. Some lovely fine, chewy, ferrous tannins and a seamless extended finish. Grace and power." - Dave Brookes, Published 16 August 2024
