95/100 — Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion · 2023 Vintage
“From vines planted in ’99; contains less than 3% marsanne/roussanne/viognier. A bright crimson red. Elegant and perfumed with aromas of spiced red cherries, raspberries and white and black pepper together with a touch of violets. It’s a little more approachable than the ’22 at the same age, with silken and persistent tannins rounding out a beautifully balanced wine to drink now and over the next seven to 10 years.”
About This Wine
Yeringberg Shiraz is produced in the Yarra Valley from vines planted in 1999, with a small inclusion of less than 3% marsanne, roussanne and viognier.
About the Winery
A 19th century Yarra Valley pioneer, Yeringberg’s renaissance began when third-generation winegrowers Guill and Katherine de Pury replanted vines in 1969 and made their first commercial wine in 1974.
Since 2008, the wines have been made by daughter Sandra de Pury, while her brother David de Pury, who holds a PhD in plant physiology, manages the vineyards alongside Yeringberg’s grass-fed lamb and cattle.
Committed to the future, a new winery is in the design phase and a new vine program began in 2020 to mitigate against climate change and phylloxera, establishing two new vineyard sites on south- and east-facing slopes.
