97/100 Kerin O’Keefe: From the cru located on the opposite side of the Barolo ridge from Cannubi that has a warmer microclimate and clay and silt soils, the 2021 Sarmassa has intense aromas of dark spice, wild berry, camphor and a whiff of botanical herb. Full-bodied and intense, the palate features ripe Morello cherry, liquorice, blood orange and a hint recalling almond liqueur accompanied by tightly-knit, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. What a gorgeous wine and a great expression of this vineyard site.
