Cigliuti is a great estate in the Barbaresco region but remains relatively unknown. Serraboella is the top site for Cigliuti and is a bargain at this price. It’s made in the more traditional way. Long aging in large old oak and ready to live a long life.
The dark fruits, earthy and spicy outlook of Cigliuti is quite attractive with a lot of air. This is a wine that needs another 10-15 years. But once it is there, it'll be a real treat.
The Fratelli Cigliuti winery is situated on the Serraboella hill overlooking Neive. The family-run (5th Generation) 6.5-hectare property leans towards the traditional. All grapes are estate-grown and handpicked. Fermentation is with native yeasts in stainless steel. Aging is in larger Slavonian oak barrels along with some barriques. The wines at Cigliuti are complex, mineral and true to where they were grown.
Cigliuti Serraboella Barbaresco 2018 Wine Review Importer Notes
“100% Nebbiolo from the Serraboella cru in Neive. The site sits on calcareous soils at 350m above sea level, with a southwestern exposure. The vines are aged between 27 and 57 years old and yields are about 4 to 4.5 tonnes per hectare. Fermentation and maceration take place in steel vats at controlled temperatures. The wine is matured for 26 months in Slavonian oak casks and mid-sized French oak casks.”
