I've been buying the wines of Jean Foillard for a few years now. The Cote du Py is consistently my favourite in a very strong range of wines. It is always a lovely, twisting, complex melange of sweet fruits, florals, mineral/schisty and a bit of dirt and funk. Long finishing and ever evolving, the last pour is always disappointing only for the fact that there is no more to be had.
Foillard Cote du Py is one of the benchmark Beaujolais wines.
Jean Foillard and the Foillard Cote du Py are icons of French wine. From 1985 he followed Marcel Lapierre and Jules Chauvet into the depths of ‘natural’ Beaujolais. The wines are compelling but worthy of time in the cellar. Don’t think, just buy, the Foillard Cote du Py never hangs around for long. Check out Kermit Lynch’s profile on Foillard.
