Halliday Wine Companion - 93 Points
This is an emblematic Maxwell wine, from vines planted in 1953 on the lower reaches of the estate. Matured in French and American oak, 20% new. Another mild year, and a relatively elegant expression of this wine. There’s no lack of intensity, just a little more breathing space. Blackberry, dark plum, anise, cacao nibs, worn leather, raspberry pastille, allspice, clove and brown cardamom. There’s richness here, but also reserve and balance. It’s a good release. Marcus Ellis
