The iconic wine that is Shaw and Smith Sauvignon Blanc needs little introduction. I am unsure of how many of the infamous Shaw and Smith Yum Chas I attended, but this wine is the flavour of this lunch-time feasts. While New World Sauvignon Blanc is not normally my thing, this is a wine that I can enjoy because it has depth of flavour. It is one of the few wines that can capture the attention of amateur wine drinker and serious wine professional.
Shaw and Smith Sauvignon Blanc is clean, dry, fresh, showing apples, grapes and tropical fruits and a little citrus. The palate is zingy, fresh and lively. A touch of phenolic grip adds some more depth to this wine. Drink it young, and if you can, at Yum Cha.
Shaw and Smith is a brilliant producer making wine from the Adelaide Hills region. Beautifully set up, Shaw and Smith have a strong focus on quality and sustainability. The team at Shaw and Smith are constantly making some of the best Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Shiraz in the country.

“A tightly coiled wine that leans on the Lemon Aspen, nashi pear and grapefruit side. A hint of Lilikoi but very subtle, with some silver needle and paperbark. This kindles its citrus fruit with an elegant natural line of acidity, paired back and complimented by some lemon pith and white melon. In a dry and warm year, the S + S team have captured the vitality of their golden child but showcasing the fresh grace that sunshine and hang time can bring. Perhaps a less device style of Sauvignon Blanc for a crowd, I’m thinking wedding vibes. A nice partnership might be Meredith goats cheese arancini, on a lawn under the sunshine. Drink now or forever hold your peace."

This is a big and varied region. Basically, it stretches from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part, where its altitude is quite high, you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.
