William Downie Bull Swamp is big, succulent, rich and mineral. The dark, candied fruits and fineness remind me of the Beaune or Gevrey style of Burgundy. This is a wine that will definitely do the long haul in your cellar. But it provides so much joy to drink now.
Bill Downie is easily my favourite Pinot Noir maker in Australia. He has experienced working at tiny producers and large wine factories, in Australia and Burgundy. Since 2003 Bill has been making Pinot Noir under his own name. First from the Yarra Valley and subsequently he added Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland to the range complemented by a one off wine (or two). The first William Downie Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2003 was continuing to thrill 15 years after the initial release, and if I still had a bottle, I bet it would still be great.
