Brooding Yarra Valley Shiraz with plum, mixed berries, graphite and a long, finely structured finish.
About The Wine
Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2023 is a beautifully composed cool climate Shiraz with depth, perfume and structure in equal measure. Medium bodied and finely detailed, it shows dark plum and mixed berry fruit wrapped around savoury spice, smoky nuance and a subtle stalk derived grip. This is a poised, expressive Shiraz with purity, tension and a strong sense of site.
Halliday Wine Compaion - 97 Points
From a shiraz vineyard planted in '73 adjacent to Yarra Yering. 10% whole bunches and matured mainly in puncheons (15% new). Perfumed with aromas of cherry, cassis, a floral nuance and freshly ground black pepper. On the palate this medium-bodied and elegant wine is a little more compact and precise than the Dry Red No. 2. The tannins are superfine and persistent and, while this may not quite have the staying power of the previous two vintages, it will still age gracefully for a decade, if not two! Philip Rich
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Mixed berry fruits, perfume, graphite, aniseed spice and a gentle smoky note.
Palate: Medium bodied and layered, with plum fruit concentration, liquorice spice, cured meat detail and excellent fruit purity through the palate.
Finish: Long and finely structured, with superfine tannins, subtle stalk grip and a savoury, smoky edge carrying through the close.
Serving Suggestions
A superb match for roast lamb, duck, chargrilled beef, game dishes or mature hard cheeses.
About the Winery / Producer / Region
Yarra Yering is one of the Yarra Valley’s most iconic estates, originally established by Dr Bailey Carrodus. The Underhill Shiraz comes from a single eight acre block planted in 1973 on the western edge of the estate, a site known for producing Shiraz with both muscle and finesse. The 2023 release continues that lineage with a wine that feels both site driven and distinctly Yarra Yering in style.
Cellaring Potential
This is built to age and should reward patient cellaring over the medium to long term. Its balance, tannin profile and concentration suggest it will evolve beautifully over many years under good conditions.
Collector’s Note
A highly relevant collector release from one of the Yarra Valley’s benchmark producers, the 2023 Underhill Shiraz sits among the top rated Australian Shiraz releases of the vintage.
